What is a single-pane window?
Single-pane windows are a pretty common window type on today’s market. You can find them in most homes and commercial buildings because of their simple build, cost-effective price and long-lasting durability. Many home and building owners opt in for the single-pane versus the double at times because of the simplicity and small upkeep they require.
So, what exactly is a single-pane window? To answer that question in the most basic terms, a single-pane window is a window made with a single layer of glass. These windows can come in all the same styles, designs and materials that double-pane windows come in but are not as efficient at keeping external sound to a minimum or holding internal energy inside as good as a double-pane window.
What’s the cost?
To replace a single-pane of glass in your window, the average cost starts around $3 per square foot. After labor, the cost of replacing a single-pane can put you at about $50-75.
What are the cons?
With single-pane windows, there isn’t a a great amount of insulation build in for energy efficiency. Single-pane windows are known to be the least energy-efficient because of their single pane versus other windows that have double. Along with the lack of efficiency, if you’re in a busy or loud neighborhood and trying to find peace and quiet with your windows, single-pane windows would not be the best choice. These windows don’t have the capability to block out loud noises because of how thin the pane of glass is. You’d be better using a double-pane window to block out noise. Lastly, while it is cheaper to go with a single-pane window, the costs of energy bills over time will add up and you will find yourself actually losing money because of the lack of efficiency a single-pane window provides.
How do I know if my window is single or double-paned?
There are a couple different ways to check if your window is single or double-paned. The first way would be to simply look at the inside edge of the window and see if you notice two panes of glass separated by a small space. If there are two, you have a double-glazed window. If you only see one pane of glass with no spacing, then it’s safe to say you have a single-glazed window.
